Vocalizing grunts, clicks, gulps or , funny noises with mouth or imitating animals are examples of how some sounds for cartoons are made . We recorded sounds of whistles , tools , toys, and any other type of material. Then use the computer softwares and plugins to twist, distort, shapes to create movement or action and also the character ‘s personality.

Creativity is the key when we make sounds for animation ,they have to be funny and help the story. Some of these sounds are created to refer us to some sensation and memory. See the new Pixar’s movie , it has a very interesting sound work

A Little History

Devices and props were built to created all kind of sound for animations early days. Musical instruments help to produce these sound effects. This kind of devices can be controlled in the studio. Recording equipment were not flexible at all, couldn’t be taken to locations outside.
Using this props you had a better syncronization and an acceptable sound quality.

This sounds remeber a cartoon action 

I remember watching Road Runner cartoons when I was a kid and waiting and waiting, when the Coyote fell, for the explosion that came after the long shell scream — that ol’ Warner explosion. The way the silence before the impact made it seem so much farther away, and so much more painful.

When editing sound for animation I find that things are funniest when one covers the specifics around exaggerated movements, or antics. It seems as unfinished without covering it with sound,  it is part of the story.

The Disney’s style was to use musical instruments for sound effects. If the character impacts on the wall, the hit will be a crash cymbal or a timpani drum boing. Sound that still be using today.

Some tools to create classic effects for cartoons

Bats flying- use an umbrella opening and closing rapidly for the sound of bats flying cut the low end
umbrella opening is good for a parachute.

Body and face hits – Hitting real meat, use a baseball bat to hit leather jacket wrapped around baseball gloves, add breaking of chicken bones.

Bones crunching and breaking – acorns, small apples and walnuts on wooden parquet surface

Car engineIf you need a car engine sound, buzz into a brass mouthpiece – (tuba/baritone) or bassoon reeds – and pitch shift it down.

Driving on gravel- Plastic bags, polythene

Earthquake – Rubbing on an inflated balloon.Wooden cracking

Effects, voices and ambiences

I’ll show you an example of creating effects for cartoon. The animation is a completely white paper for the sound, creating a completely new universe.
This is a cartoon  is called Mansão Maluca do Professor Ambrosio, produced by the Tortuga Studios (learn more)

Here we show some stages in the creative process of sound. In the first video we see the design with the sound mixed with soundtrack, effects, foleys and voices. In the second we hear only the effects, foleys and ambience.

The voices are recorded before the animation this is what we call original voice (we will talk about this soon). The voices are recorded with all actors in the studio, so there is an interaction with them, creating more life to the characters.

After animation ready to go we start the audio post production where we make sound for the whole scene. In the example is a cave underwater.
Here we create the movements, and scratches (Foleys) and effects to create drama and in cartoons to make it funny. Only at the end of the voices they are inserted into the movie and you can see in  the last video how to do that.
